Eden Gardens, Sydney Australia
HBO+EMTB designed Eden Gardens, a horticultural centre located adjacent to Lane Cove National Park, one of Sydney’s oldest national parks.
Previously a working brick pit, the regeneration of the site includes the main building with basement parking set in hectares of landscaped gardens. The building houses a cafe restaurant, art gallery, horticultural bookshop, gift shop, education and conference rooms, and retail garden centre. Constructed from a light, steel frame it forms a dramatic backdrop for the surrounding garden displays.
The striking architecture incorporates an unfolding steel canopy rising 12 metres high at its apex. The canopy’s linear, concrete gutter planters contain plant material that will grow and entwine through the steel mesh of the canopy creating a landmark “green wing” in the landscape.
The relationship between the environment and urban existence is manifest in the building through the application of sustainable initiatives such as the maximisation of day light, solar heating, water recycling and natural cross ventilation. The facility demonstrates an overriding commitment to environmentally sustainable design and minimisation of energy consumption is the main driver of the entire complex.
