Lilyfield Public Housing, Sydney
The Lilyfield Housing Redevelopment in Sydney has been awarded a 5 Star Green Star rating under the Green Building Council of Australia’s Multi Unit Residential Pilot tool.
The design results in a built form which is fully integrated and entirely in keeping with the character of the neighbourhood with minimal impact on the amenity of neighbouring properties. To maximise the use of the site for public housing and associated open space, car parking is not provided within the development and as an alternative, is proposed along the street frontages of the site.
The project established important new benchmarks for Ecologically Sustainable Design in Public Housing. The design achieved highly sustainable outcomes that were both realistic and achievable in terms of function, project demographics and ultimately housing affordability. Robust passive design features aimed at maximising sustainable gain and minimising cost were adopted in favour of more expensive solutions that were prone to failure and recurrent maintenance costs.
