Allan Green Conservatory, Perth Australia

The City of Perth commissioned HBO+EMTB to prepare concept designs for the redevelopment the Allan Green Conservatory into a café restaurant suitable for lease to a private operator. The Conservatory originally housed some 1,200 tropical and sub-tropical plants, and was occasionally utilised for special exhibits.

The redevelopment sought to reconfigure the existing building to attract increased visitor numbers to the Esplanade precinct. The scheme capitalises on greater pedestrian traffic from the revitalisation of nearby William Street as an urban thoroughfare.

The pyramid shaped building presented unique challenges as any proposed change of use must offer maximum flexibility for tenant occupation. HBO+EMTB's design proposes the striking built form be retained, with lightweight new additions expanding outside the  the existing shell. The concept has been apopted by The City of Perth and is being marketed to interested operators.
