Globe Mills Residential, Sydney Australia

Globe Mills was a major producer of wool fabrics, operating in Sydney’s inner west. HBO+EMTB provided heritage consultancy services for the adaptive re-use of their former wool mills and cotton store into residential apartments.

Despite the subdivision of the industrial building into apartments, the adaptation still enables the building’s form, industrial character and structure to be interpreted. Creation of an internal atrium provides abundant light and ventilation but importantly, exposes the robust concrete structure of octagonal columns and beams in this major circulation area.

HBO+EMTB Heritage Director, Brian McDonald was engaged as heritage architect from the first development proposal to project completion. The commission involved included collaborating on adaptive re-use solutions, heritage impact assessments and consultation with local Council.
