Old Bakery And Cottages, Grose Street, Parramatta, Australia

Parramatta Leagues Club commissioned HBO+EMTB Heritage to document conservation and adaptive re-use works for the old bakery and four cottages at 6-12 Grose Street, Parramatta.

The bakery was a single brick structure with a corrugated steel roof in poor condition, requiring an innovative approach to conservation of the significant fabric, including extending the roof to re-interpret the original extent of the building and shelter the fragile brickwork that provides evidence of the original baker’s ovens and flues.

The late Victorian and Federation period cottages required extensive conservation work to brickwork, weatherboard walls and detail joinery. The project included upgrading of kitchens and bathrooms and design of compatible additions to bring the cottages up to present day living standards or to function as small commercial premises; eg: medical suites or professional offices.
