Arts of Asia Gallery, Auckland Museum New Zealand
HBO+EMTB designed this new gallery for the Museum’s collection of Asian artefacts, showcasing items previously in storage or scattered throughout the institution.
The gallery allows the collection to be displayed in its entirety for the first time, cohesively presenting works from different eras, cultures and geographic locations.
The minimalist, well-detailed solution showcases over 300 artefacts, providing built form that does not compete with the artefacts.
The design team worked closely with the Gallery’s curator to determine the most appropriate display for individual items, with due consideration for chronology, theme and composition.
