Bedford Place Park, Sydney Australia

Bedford Place Park is an existing pocket park within Surry Hills serving a number of functions. It is a place of rest for residents and workers within the local area, provides an address to the historic Chalmers House, and is a traffic calming measure.

Due to the age of the park and change in local authorities, the park had fallen into neglect. Privately funded public domain contributions allowed the space to be returned to its original landscape intent.

The design includes reinstatement of original garden beds, replanting with contemporary planting schemes, justification of street furniture locations and addition of a new public art commission by Camie Lyons.

The revitalised Bedford Place Park now provides an identifiable meeting place for recreation and rest, responding to the needs of local users and paying tribute to it’s historically significant context fronting Chalmers House.
