Edmund Barton Building, Canberra Australia

Following an invited design competition, HBO+EMTB was selected to prepare the master plan for refurbishing Harry Seidler’s Edmund Barton Building on Kings Avenue, Barton in Canberra. The commission subsequently involved preparation of the landscape master plan.

Originally, constructed in the 1970’s to house separate but related government departments, the Edmund Barton Building is one of the most elegant works of Seidler’s mid career, and demonstrates his unique architectural sensibility; uniting program and structure in a tectonically brilliant scheme.

The landscape design intent is to simplify and rationalize the planting so that it more closely reflects the Seidler landscape concept both aesthetically and functionally, provide more shade in summer and bold yet simple seasonal interest.

The scheme also introduces new elements (café’, fitness club and childcare facilities) that aim to restore Seidler’s original civic vision for a series of vibrant public spaces at ground level.
